Playing Pokemon
Pokemon Play Area

Pokémon is an easy, but fun trading card game. As long as someone can read the cards, they can play the game. You have a field where you lay out the cards in specific zones to keep them organized. There are only a few rules that you have to remember to play during your turn. Beyond those rules you just do exactly what the cards say. There is no player interaction on your opponents turn which means that you can play your turn out on your own pace without the interruptions that other games have. On your turn you can do the following things:

  • (First thing) Draw a card
  • Play a Basic Pokémon onto your bench
  • Evolve a Pokémon that has already been out for a turn
  • Use Trainer Cards (Some Trainer Cards are Supporters. You can only play one Supporter Card a turn but as many as you want of regular Trainer Cards. You can also not play a Supporter Card if you go first)
  • Place one Energy on one Pokémon (Some cards or abilities tell you to place another Energy Card on a Pokémon. These do not count toward your one Energy limit)
  • (Last Action. This will end your turn) Use your active Pokémon (The one up front) to attack your opponent’s active Pokémon

That’s it! There are of course more rules than this but this is all you need to do to begin to play the game. Once you have these down you can begin to branch out and learn more of the advanced rules. The more you know the cooler combos you will be able to do with you Trainer Cards and Pokemon!

All that is left is to decide on a deck. It is recommended that you begin with a pre-constructed deck. These are sold as a complete deck and are ready to play right out of the box. There are even boxes with two decks in them that are designed to be balanced and play against eachother. After you learn more about the game you can create your own deck featuring your favorite combo or Pokemon!

PokéParty!

PokéParty is our kid-focused event for everything Pokémon! We host one each month alternating between our Bentonville and Fayetteville stores.

With many activities, kids of all ages can find something to enjoy. Each child is given a goodie bag with Pokémon-themed items including sleeves and cards.

They then can go and pick which station they want to play at first. The content changes but the stations are:

  • Craft Station – This usually has something to create that the kids can take home with them. In the past, we have done paint-your-own Pokémon Eggs, felt bookmarks, Perler beads, Pokémon Santa hats and Pokémon masks. And we have a ton more ideas!
  • Coloring Station – We have coloring and activity pages with crayons for you to complete. Whether it is giving your favorite Pokémon a new color scheme, remembering and drawing a Pokémon from a silhouette or picking up a crossword puzzle, you can let your creativity fly like a piggy.
  • Trade Table/Play Table – We have a stadium set up to teach you how to play Pokémon. There are three store decks which are specifically designed to be easy to use and let you get a feel for the game. Or you can bring your own, if you’re an experienced trainer and challenge others. Some Trainers are not in it for the glory. They love to sit and collect as well as trade for their favorite Pokémon.
  • Snacks! – The most important table. Everyone is excited and that excitement needs fuel. We usually have two types of snacks depending on what the theme of the event is. We try to balance sugar with something else so no one starts feeling bad towards the end of the event. There will also be a drink of some kind. Usually punch or a warm drink in the winter.

Crafting and learning about all of the different Pokémon is part of the fun of the Poképarty each month at Gear Gaming.
