What is Dungeons and Dragons and why should I be playing it?
Dungens and Dragons (also called D&D) is the most popular Role Playing Game in the world. WIth a history spanning back over 50 years it has evolved over the years to become an incredible and versitile system.
The best way I can describe it is that you are part of a play, you know your character and what has happened in their story so far, but it’s up to you to adlib their actions from here on out.
Are they a hero, principled and strong? Stand between the evils of the world and the weak no matter the cost. Sly and opprotunistic? Have them be a team player until things get dicy then skip out before the danger is too great. Is it all about the expierience points and treasure? Manipulate the rules to give your character immencely strong abilities and always remember to loot everything!
Where to Begin
The best place to start is two products. One is aptly named the the Starter Set and the others is the Essentials Set. Both of these products have a cut down version of the rules to allow new players to dip their toes in without becoming overwhelmed. They also include characters and an adventure to run that will take the players from new characters to 5th level.
This is a good starting point to see if this is the game for you. To continue on your journey there are 3 core rulebooks for the game that were updated in 2024 ad 2025. The Player’s handbook is needed by everyone playing the game but to be the Dungeon Master or the person running the story for the other players two additional books are needed. The Dungen Master’s Guide and the Monster Manual. These books contain information that the players are not supposed to have such as the exact monster stats, magic items, and guides to build dungeons and story lines.
Outside these core rulebooks there are a large variety of other books that add special rules for certain locations inside the D&D multiverse as well as full adventures written with the help of the authors that wrote the books which crafted the stories which propelled some to the best seller list.
Find a game
If you are unable to find enough regular players for a game amoung your friends and families there are a few facebook groups that will advertise games and recruit players.
Gear Gaming itself holds weekly games at both our stores from 6PM to 9PM every Wednesday. These are pickup games which do not require a commitment of time to participate in. Come two weeks then if you get busy and cannot make it for 3 weeks no problem! We will just slot you back into an empty seat at one of our tables.
This program has grown from when we started it in early 2024 and it is not not uncommon to have 8+ tables with over 30 players betwen our stores.
